San Antonio Stock Show Report 02/19/2019
Celeste FFA members brought home $20,000 in Exhibitor scholarships, hundreds of dollars in prize money and awards, experiences of a lifetime, and memories that will last forever.
Breeding Gilts
Hunter Bolton competed in the junior breeding gilt show in San Antonio. This was his first shot at San Antonio and although he didn’t place like he wanted to, the experience he took away that week will pay off in future years. Congrats to Hunter.
Wether Dam Breeding Ewe Show
Kambrie Hogue showed her wether dam at the San Antonio Livestock Show and was selected Overall Grand Champion wether dam breeding ewe. Not only did she receive a banner and buckle, but she is also the recipient of a $10,000 exhibitor scholarship!
Market Sheep
On Wednesday, February 13, Kambrie Hogue competed in the Market Wether lamb show with her Southdown wether. There was lots of tough competition with 40+ sheep per class. She did get pulled and across the scales which is an accomplishment in itself. They only sell 6 sheep per class. She made it to the top 20 but didn’t get into the top 6 places. Great job Kambrie!
Justin Richey showed his medium wool wether in the market lamb show on Thursday, February 14. There were 50+ in his class and they sell 9. After getting pulled and across the scales, he ended up placing in the top 20. The competition level at San Antonio is very high, so Justin did a great job with his market lamb.
Jaxson Dillard also showed his medium wool market lamb on Feb. 14. He had 60+ in his class. He made the first cut and placed in the top 20, but he did not make it to the top 9 to go to the sale.
Sheep Skillathon
On Tuesday, February 12, Justin Richey and Kambrie Hogue competed in the Sheep Skillathon contest. Although we weren’t in the top 5 individuals, Justin and Kambrie did well in this challenging event. This contest involves questions and skill stations that encompass various facets of the sheep industry.
Beef Skillathon
Started off the Junior Heifer Show week with these 2 young ladies competing in the Beef Skillathon. This contest involves questions and skill stations that encompass various facets of the beef industry. Both students did a great job. Madisyn Douglas finished in 14th place in a very large intermediate division. Reagan Sumrow did an outstanding job competing in the senior division.
Breeding Heifers
Jaxson Dillard finished off his final time to compete at the San Antonio Livestock Show with a big win. He showed his Shorthorn heifer on February 14. He finished 1st in his class, Grand Champion Senior Heifer Division and Overall Grand Champion Shorthorn Heifer. Jaxson was the recipient of a $10,000 San Antonio Livestock Exhibitor scholarship and a trophy buckle.
Raegan Sumrow exhibited her Red Brahman heifer in San Antonio on February 14. She finished in 5th place in a large class of 20+. At San Antonio, they show all the Red Brahman with the Gray Brahman. This makes it tough since it is 2 different breeds and the Reds have a hard time competing in the ring with the Grays. Considering all that, she did amazing. Raegan’s heifer was the highest placing Red Brahman in the class. She did a great job, and the playing field will be evened out in a couple of weeks when she competes at the Houston Livestock Show where the Red Brahman will show separate from the Grays.
Madisyn Douglas showed her younger Santa Gertrudis heifer and Santa Gertrudis pair on Friday in San Antonio. The younger heifer place 9th in a very large, competitive class and 8th with her cow/calf pair (showing for the injured Kaden Douglas). She did a great job. Congrats Madisyn.
